The department of geology at Government Arts and Science College was started in September 2017.The department is being supported by Government of Tamilnadu. Discipline with a geology area such as Petrology, Mineralogy, Hydrogeology, Stratigraphy, Paleontology and etc. It has various job opportunities at Geologist/Geoscientist like Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Coal India Limited (CIL), Mines, Central Public Work Department (CPWD), Tamilnadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), Public Work Department (PWD), Central Ground Water Board (CGWD), Tamilnadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) AND many private companies. The department strives to achieve academic excellence and to produce the geologist and geoscientist and etc.

The department has well equipped laboratories with sophisticated equipment’s to cater to the needs of practical course work of B.Sc., students. Major facilities of available in the department are listed below; mineral and rocks (megascopic and microscopic), model polarizing microscope and crystal model.
Geology Museum having a collecting of about 20 rock forming minerals, various rock types and fossils.
